Description
Before Bill Graham’s Fillmore ruled the scene, the Avalon Ballroom was San Francisco’s mind-melting headquarters for psychedelic rock. Operated by Family Dog Productions and often lit by the North American Ibis Alchemical Company (as noted here), the Avalon hosted the wildest bills of the Haight-Ashbury heyday. This original mailer poster captures a four-night run from June 22–25, 1967, featuring The Charlatans and 13th Floor Elevators—two bands who blurred the lines between western kitsch, LSD evangelism, and garage-rock grit.
The 13th Floor Elevators were Texas visionaries, led by the wailing voice and jug-blowing madness of Roky Erickson. Their 1966 debut The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators coined the genre’s name, and their influence on acts like Janis Joplin, The Doors, and the Butthole Surfers can’t be overstated. This flyer captures the Elevators at their peak, before internal chaos and legal troubles splintered the band. A true relic of the acid underground.
Flyers like this weren’t made to last—this one did. Own a real slice of the Summer of Love, stamped, mailed, and soaked in psychedelia.
