Description
Published during the early 1950s explosion of postwar American country and western popularity, Scrapbook of Hillbilly and Western Stars serves as a lively visual time capsule documenting radio, stage, and early television performers who helped transition regional “hillbilly” music into mainstream American entertainment. Issued by Artists Publications and edited by Thurston Moore (not the Sonic Youth Thurston, but a mid-century pop culture compiler), the piece combines fan-book aesthetics with early celebrity documentation, pairing biographical sketches with studio portraits and playful graphic design by Hal Bachemin.
The scrapbook format creates an engaging survey of performers including Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Tex Ritter, Minnie Pearl, Hank Thompson, Red Foley, and numerous now lesser-known radio and touring circuit performers who defined country music’s early golden era. Of particular charm are the instructional square dance spreads, candid performer photos, and bold, colorful cover art typical of early 1950s promotional print culture. Surviving copies tend to show heavy wear due to their interactive, fan-oriented nature, making presentable examples much harder to find.
A bright, visually appealing survivor from country music’s formative mass-media era.
