1983 Hüsker Dü Meat Puppets Phoenix Punk Flyer Madison Square Garden

Original punk flyers were never intended to survive. They were printed cheaply, stapled to telephone poles, taped to record store windows, and handed out on street corners. This example advertises an outstanding 1983 bill featuring Hüsker Dü alongside the Meat Puppets and Phoenix’s own Junior Achievement (later The Harvest) at Madison Square Garden. I picked it up in a record store sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and it’s been part of my collection ever since.

By the fall of 1983, Hüsker Dü were rapidly becoming one of the defining bands of American hardcore while the Meat Puppets were beginning to push punk into strange new territory. This flyer captures that moment before both bands reached a much wider audience. Authentic regional punk ephemera like this has become increasingly difficult to locate, especially with a direct connection to the Southwest scene.
