Description
Du mich auch returns Anders Petersen to photographs he made as a young man in Hamburg and Stockholm during the late 1960s, particularly among the people and places surrounding Hamburg’s St. Pauli district. Bar girls, dock workers, petty criminals, street vendors, tattooed men, outsiders and friends move through the book with the intimacy that became Petersen’s signature. These are not pictures made from a comfortable distance: Petersen lived among his subjects, and the photographs feel less like reportage than fragments from an extended family album.
Published by Journal in Stockholm in 2002, the book gathers 72 black-and-white photographs, many previously unpublished, and looks backward at the period that also produced Petersen’s celebrated Café Lehmitz work. The result is raw, affectionate and remarkably alive—a photobook about belonging as much as nightlife or subculture. This copy is signed by Petersen on the final blank in a wonderfully odd fashion: he apparently turned the entire book upside down before signing it, leaving the signature inverted in relation to the rest of the volume.
An intimate, beautifully made Anders Petersen photobook—and a signed copy with a little extra personality built right into the autograph.
