Description
This 1987 Panache Press facsimile beautifully reproduces Warhol’s privately printed early-1950s cat books, originally issued in extremely small quantities and now nearly impossible to find and closing in on low-6-figure books. The charm is all here — Warhol’s loose line, hand-lettered text, and those wonderfully imperfect color washes that prefigure the Pop sensibility to come.
Included is Holy Cats by Andy Warhol’s mother, Julia Warhola, whose distinctive calligraphic script and naïve drawings were central to Warhol’s early book projects. The original limitation notice is reproduced as it appeared in the original copy numbered four, giving this facsimile real historical context. Housed in the bright, color-blocked slipcase designed by Yolanda Cuomo, the set has shelf presence and immediate visual punch.
Early Warhol before the soup cans. Cats before The Factory. And Julia!! A clean, sharp example of one of his most beloved early projects.
