Offering: CHARLES BUKOWSKI. The Movie: “Barfly”. Santa Rosa, CA: The Black Sparrow Press, 1987. Near fine in boards and the glassine dust jacket, as issued. One of 500 copies, the trade issue. With 42 pages of black-and-white photos from both the film and behind-the scenes. Film based on Buk’s early years, before finding fame as a poet, and his life with Jane Cooney Baker.
Barfly was my initial introduction to Charles Bukowski. I had no idea who he was, but I was bored one day, wanted to see a movie, and I liked Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. After I left the theater, I headed straight for my local bookstore — Changing Hands in Tempe AZ — and grabbed a bright orange book off the shelf that caught my attention, and I’ve been a fan every since.
Great screenplay, and a strong addition to your Buk collection…especially if you’re not ready to pay hundreds more for a signed, limited edition.
