Unlike a traditional concert flyer, this original Black Flag newsletter functioned as a direct line between SST Records and the underground punk community. Alongside Raymond Pettibon’s unmistakable artwork are announcements for new SST releases and a schedule of upcoming July appearances, including Black Flag, Meat Puppets, Saccharine Trust, Saint Vitus, and other bands that would become pillars of American hardcore. It’s less an advertisement than a snapshot of the SST universe while it was still being built.
I picked up this flyer from a record store sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I’ve held onto it ever since, but it’s time for it to find a new home with someone who appreciates these fragile pieces of underground history. Original SST newsletters like this weren’t meant to survive, making them wonderful artifacts from one of independent music’s most influential labels.
