Founded by photographer, publisher, and showman Burr McIntosh, The Burr McIntosh Monthly occupies an interesting place between the illustrated magazines of the nineteenth century and the celebrity culture publications that would follow in the twentieth. The Burr McIntosh Monthly is one of the most visually ambitious American magazines of the early twentieth century. This issue features a substantial illustrated article, “A Day With Mark Twain,” by Paul Thompson, documenting a visit to Twain’s recently completed Stormfield estate in Redding, Connecticut. Included are photographs of Twain at home as well as views of the property and interiors.
Also present is a striking full-page portrait of actress Ethel Barrymore in her celebrated role in Lady Frederick, along with a cover portrait of actor Henry E. Dixey. As was typical of the magazine, the issue combines celebrity profiles, photography, theater, literature, and contemporary culture in an oversized format printed on high-quality stock. Individual issues featuring Mark Twain remain especially desirable, particularly those published during the final year of his life.
