Description
A terrific little archive from the golden age of Southern California physique culture: six vintage 8 × 10 glossies documenting the bodybuilding world of the late 1950s, when Muscle Beach, neighborhood gyms, physique contests and the emerging fitness industry were creating an entirely new visual vocabulary for the American male body. The photographs range from carefully staged gym portraits and classic bodybuilding poses to an outdoor trophy portrait and a dramatic competition-stage image. One photograph is credited to Milt Svensk; another carries the period stamp of Swan Photo of Santa Monica, placing at least part of the group squarely within Southern California’s mid-century physique scene.
The knockout of the group is the wonderful competition photograph: a trophy-holding bodybuilder surrounded by swimsuit-clad women and two smiling men, one contestant still wearing her number 18 tag. Evidence within the group points strongly toward circa 1957, and April 18, 1957 was indeed a Thursday—the weekday/date combination associated with the material. More than simply “beefcake,” these photographs document the moment bodybuilding was moving from an eccentric subculture toward the enormously influential Southern California fitness culture that followed. Sold together as found, the six prints make an unusually coherent and visually terrific mid-century bodybuilding archive.
A great group for collectors of vernacular photography, bodybuilding, Muscle Beach, Southern California culture, vintage fitness, and mid-century male physique photography.
