Description
Two original 1976 publicity stills from Brian De Palma’s Carrie, the landmark adaptation of Stephen King’s first published novel. One captures the film’s tortured mother-daughter relationship, with Sissy Spacek as Carrie White collapsing into the arms of Piper Laurie’s Margaret White after Carrie’s telekinetic powers are unleashed at school. The second gives us an entirely different piece of the movie: John Travolta as Billy Nolan alongside Nancy Allen as Chris Hargensen, smiling from inside the car before their cruelty becomes central to the film’s catastrophic prom-night climax.
The crossover appeal is what makes the pair fun. Carrie is simultaneously Stephen King, 1970s horror, Brian De Palma, New Hollywood, Sissy Spacek—and very early John Travolta, released shortly before Saturday Night Fever turned him into one of the defining movie stars of the decade. Both photographs retain their original United Artists captions and 1976 copyright lines, giving them the unmistakable look of studio-issued movie publicity material rather than later reproduction photographs.
Not rare, not precious—just two terrific pieces of 1970s horror history with enough names attached to them to fill a marquee.
