By the time this chapbook appeared, Charles Bukowski had already become one of the most recognizable voices in American underground literature. Yet collectors continue to seek out publications like this one because they preserve the environment in which his reputation was built: independent presses, limited editions, and small literary magazines operating far from the mainstream publishing world. Going Modern was issued as a special chapbook edition of Oro Madre and retains all the charm of the era’s handmade literary culture.
Particularly appealing here is the production itself. The booklet features Bukowski artwork, a stated limitation of 500 copies, and publication by Ruddy Duck Press of Fremont, California. While Bukowski’s major Black Sparrow titles are well known, ephemeral publications such as this often prove more elusive in the marketplace.
