Transit grew out of the same wonderfully obsessive world as Kevin Ring’s Beat Scene, which he started in England in 1988 as a home for Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg, Bukowski and the writers orbiting them. Ring later described Transit as the more poetry-oriented publication; it ultimately ran for twenty-five issues, with Bukowski among its frequent contributors. This fifth issue, dated simply “early 1994,” puts Philip Whalen, Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski right on the back cover—three very different routes through the postwar American literary underground.
For the Bukowski collector, the killer is the cover: a large Charles Bukowski drawing © 1993, complete with Buk’s familiar loose-line figure and little dog. Ring had been publishing Bukowski for years by this point; he recalls that Bukowski unexpectedly sent him a large packet of unpublished poems in 1989 after encountering what Buk called his “curious little magazine.” There’s also something poignant about the date: Transit No. 5 is marked “early 1994,” the same year Bukowski died on March 9. A modest little magazine, but exactly the kind of ephemeral publication where the Beat and Bukowski worlds continued to overlap long after the famous books had appeared.
