Description
Published in 1968, only months after Che Guevara’s death in Bolivia, Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War is Guevara’s firsthand account of the guerrilla campaign that brought Fidel Castro’s revolutionary forces to power in Cuba. Beginning with the disastrous Granma landing and following the rebels through the Sierra Maestra, Guevara writes about battles, retreats, discipline, comradeship, peasants, prisoners, mistakes and victories from the perspective of someone who was simultaneously physician, soldier and commander.
Translated by Victoria Ortiz, this first American English-language edition appeared from Monthly Review Press in 1968 and runs 287 pages, incorporating photographs and maps of the guerrilla campaign. More memoir than military treatise, the book preserves Guevara’s own recollections of the revolution at the moment when his death had transformed him into one of the defining political and countercultural icons of the late 1960s. The original photographic dust jacket—with Che smoking a cigar on the front and the famous Alberto Korda portrait on the rear—makes this an especially evocative artifact of its moment.
A handsome original 1968 hardcover of one of Che Guevara’s principal books, complete with the increasingly difficult-to-find period dust jacket.
