A wonderfully visual December 1940 issue of Click, one of America’s most popular photo magazines of the era. The cover features child star Jane Withers, then at the height of her popularity, accompanied by the teaser: “Who? Is This New Child Star—Will She Win the Academy Award?” For me, however, the standout image is the full-page color illustration titled “Cuddles and Puddles.” Equal parts glamour art, pin-up illustration, and visual gag, it captures the playful sophistication that made American magazine illustration so memorable during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The image alone is worth framing.
Magazines like Click occupy a fascinating crossroads between Hollywood fan culture, illustrated journalism, advertising, and American popular art. Unlike many surviving examples, this copy remains complete despite its fragile condition and retains the colorful visual appeal that made these magazines so widely collected.
A terrific piece of pre-war Americana and Golden Age magazine publishing.
