Description

Bukowski collectors eventually discover that some of the most revealing material about the writer was not written by Bukowski himself. Spit In My Face is David Barker’s memoir of his friendship with Charles Bukowski, first written in 1982 and subsequently expanded and reissued. Rather than literary criticism or biography, Barker offers the perspective of someone who was there, recounting encounters with Bukowski and the Southern California literary underground from the inside. The result is personal, direct, and often far more intimate than the larger biographies.

This Third Edition was published in 2001 with a new preface by Barker and was limited to just 100 numbered copies, each signed by the author. Particularly appealing is Barker’s reflection on having known Bukowski when he was still largely a cult figure, before the international fame, documentaries, and endless stream of posthumous publications. For collectors interested in the wider Bukowski circle—little magazines, small presses, fellow writers, editors, and drinking companions—publications such as this help flesh out the world that produced one of America’s most collected literary figures.

A desirable Bukowski association item and an increasingly elusive small-press memoir.
