Description
Diane di Prima (1934–2020) was a trailblazing American poet, activist, and publisher whose work bridged the Beat Generation, radical politics, and feminist consciousness. One of the few prominent women in the male-dominated Beat scene, di Prima brought a bold, mystic, and unapologetically feminine voice to mid-century literature. Her early collaborations with Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones) and her co-editing of The Floating Bear made her central to New York’s avant-garde literary underground.
Reprinted by di Prima’s own The Poets Press in 1963 (Dave Haselwood at his Auerhahn Press published the title first, in the same year), The New Handbook of Heaven is a key early work from Diane di Prima—icon of the Beat Generation, feminist rebel, and co-founder of The Floating Bear. This slim volume captures di Prima’s vision of mystical rebellion, feminine power, and poetic transcendence. The elegant handset typography and letterpress printing on laid paper are hallmarks of the era’s independent literary production.
An essential early work from Diane di Prima—offered here in its rare second printing, with all the spirit of the original at a fraction of the price.
