Early Girlie! began with a chance discovery at a SoCal flea market well over a decade ago: a set of anonymous “girlie / cheesecake” color slides dating to the 1950’s found in a Kodak box labeled “Raymound”. Rather than presenting the photographs as individual reproductions, Jim Camp transformed them into a carefully sequenced artist’s book celebrating the mystery, humor, and accidental beauty of vernacular photography. The edition is housed in a custom printed envelope inspired by the original slide packaging and features a striking vintage photograph of Bettie Page on both the front and rear covers, creating an immediate visual connection to one of the twentieth century’s most enduring pin-up icons.
Each copy includes an original letterpress-printed addendum by photographer, historian, and author Eric Kroll. Printed from a polymer plate on a Vandercook SP-15 press by Camp, the addendum is hand numbered and signed by Kroll in an edition of one hundred copies. Together with the printed “Restricted to Adults” belly band, custom enclosure, and Bettie Page cover images, the publication bridges mid-century mail-order culture, contemporary book arts, and fine press craftsmanship into a cohesive edition.
With just one hundred copies produced, Early Girlie! is a thoughtfully designed artist’s book that rewards both the pin-up photography collector and fine press enthusiast. There will be no reprint.
