A solid VG copy in a Good minus jacket of the 1939 Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. edition. Tan cloth boards with red lettering and circular device to front; light soiling to lower rear board; spine tight and binding sound. Red top-stain present. Dust jacket unclipped with moderate toning, small edge wear, and noticeable damp stain to lower rear panel; front panel remains bright and presentable; jacket now in protective sleeve. Interior clean with mild age toning. Much better than it sounds.

Description

First published in 1917, A Princess of Mars introduced John Carter of Virginia and launched the Barsoom series — one of the foundational works of American planetary romance and early science fiction. Burroughs’ tale of interplanetary adventure, swordplay, and Dejah Thoris set the template for decades of pulp and genre storytelling.

This 1939 Tarzana edition reflects Burroughs’ move to publishing under his own imprint, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., and represents an early West Coast production of the classic. The jacket art — vivid, dramatic, and instantly recognizable — remains one of the most enduring visual interpretations of John Carter and Dejah Thoris.

A sharp, jacketed Tarzana-era Burroughs — increasingly difficult to find in this condition.
