Fielding Dawson occupies a unique place in postwar American literature. Associated with the Black Mountain writers and closely connected to figures such as Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Robert Duncan, Dawson spent decades producing short fiction that blended autobiography, improvisation, and literary experimentation. Although never a household name, he remains a writer’s writer and an important figure within the small-press and Black Sparrow Press tradition.

Published by Black Sparrow Press in 1988, Will She Understand? collects Dawson’s distinctive short fiction in a signed limited format. The edition was issued in 150 numbered hardcover copies signed by the author, along with a smaller lettered issue containing original artwork. Barbara Martin’s instantly recognizable design gives the volume the visual appeal collectors expect from late-period Black Sparrow productions. Particularly appealing here is the very scarce, original Black Sparrow promotional flyer laid in for Dawson’s landmark Krazy Kat / The Unveiling and Other Stories from 1951–1968, from almost two decades earlier, providing a nice piece of publisher ephemera and a direct connection to Dawson’s earlier Black Sparrow publications.
