Description
Three original ink drawings by P.G. Napolitano created for Healing Herbs of the Upper Rio Grande, published in Santa Fe by The Rydal Press in 1947. The larger sheet retains its red Rydal Press stamp and precise placement instructions identifying it as the illustration for “Post Title Page – Herbs – Page 6,” complete with crop guides and sizing notation. This is production-stage artwork — the actual drawing prepared for reproduction in the finished book.
The drawings reflect Napolitano’s strong mid-century graphic sensibility: stark desert botanicals rendered in confident black ink with dramatic negative space. The stamped sheet, in particular, carries the tangible evidence of the publishing process — layout marks, editorial arrows, and working notes that would have guided the printer. Original book illustration art with this level of production detail from a regional Santa Fe press is scarce and offers direct insight into mid-20th century Southwestern publishing history.
A compelling trio for collectors of original illustration art, Santa Fe press material, or mid-century Western book production.
