Description
Originally published by Little, Brown in 1953, Nine Stories collects some of J. D. Salinger’s most enduring short fiction, including “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” “For Esmé—with Love and Squalor,” “The Laughing Man,” “Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes,” and “Teddy.” The collection deepened the strange, wounded world surrounding Salinger’s Glass family while establishing him as far more than the author of The Catcher in the Rye—funny, precise, occasionally brutal stories about children, adults, war, alienation and the difficulty of communicating with anyone at all.
This is the 1959 first Modern Library edition, issued as number 301 in the series and retaining its wonderfully period green-and-white dust jacket. The gray cloth binding, dark topstain, patterned Modern Library endpapers and wonderfully commercial jacket copy make this a particularly good-looking midcentury Salinger object. The jacket has clearly been around the block, but that is part of the appeal here: an affordable early hardcover edition of one of the essential American short-story collections of the postwar period.
A great shelf copy of Salinger in classic Modern Library dress—with the increasingly difficult-to-find original green jacket still hanging on.
