Before Hollywood had movie stars, America had Lillian Russell. One of the great stage celebrities of the Gilded Age, Russell became famous not only for her singing and comic opera performances, but for her image itself — reproduced endlessly on postcards, cabinet cards, advertisements, sheet music, and souvenir photography. In many ways, she helped invent modern celebrity culture decades before the studio system.
