Description

Before Hollywood had movie stars, America had Lillian Russell. One of the great stage celebrities of the Gilded Age, Russell became famous not only for her singing and comic opera performances, but for her image itself — reproduced endlessly on postcards, cabinet cards, advertisements, sheet music, and souvenir photography. In many ways, she helped invent modern celebrity culture decades before the studio system. This beautifully hand-tinted Newsboy postcard captures exactly that transition point where Victorian theater culture began merging into mass media and collectible celebrity imagery.

The card itself has wonderful presence in hand. The soft coloring, elaborate costume, and direct gaze feel distinctly late-19th century, but there’s also something surprisingly modern about it. These theatrical portrait postcards were affordable objects meant to circulate widely among admirers, and surviving examples with attractive tinting and clean presentation still display beautifully today. A strong piece for collectors of theater history, early celebrity ephemera, women of the Gilded Age, or vintage postcards.

A beautiful survivor from the dawn of American celebrity culture.
