The 1938 Little, Brown first American edition in black cloth with red topstain lacks the rare dust jacket. Spine lettering strong; light rubbing at extremities; red top edge somewhat faded; text block clean with minor age toning. The New Directions reprint in purple cloth, near fine, with original Good+ Alvin Lustig-designed dust jacket, price intact ($3.75), light toning and minor edge wear. Both volumes tight and solid.

Description

Céline’s second novel remains the darker, more feral companion to Journey to the End of the Night. Published in the U.S. in 1938, this Little, Brown edition introduced American readers to Céline’s fractured, breathless prose — scandalous, funny, ugly, brilliant. It is increasingly difficult to find in respectable shape, even without the scarce jacket.

Paired here with the New Directions Modern Readers Series edition featuring the iconic Alvin Lustig dust jacket — one of the great mid-century American jacket designs. Lustig understood Céline’s psychological distortion and gave it a face. Together, these volumes show the evolution of Céline’s American presence: first arrival and modernist revival.
