The MC5 didn’t simply play rock and roll—they helped invent an entirely new vocabulary for it. Emerging from Detroit’s radical counterculture in the late 1960s, the band fused garage rock, free jazz energy, political provocation, and pure volume into a sound that would influence everyone from The Stooges to The Clash, the Sex Pistols, and countless punk and hard-rock bands that followed.
This original promotional photograph captures the group at the height of their visual power: all attitude, hair, velvet, stripes, and menace. The iconic image features the classic lineup posed against a studio backdrop with the MC5 logo printed at lower left. Original period publicity photographs of the band are far less common than later reproductions and modern reprints, making surviving examples attractive pieces for collectors of Detroit rock, proto-punk, garage rock, and underground music history.
A terrific display piece from one of the most important and influential American rock bands of the twentieth century.
