Description
Punk zines in the early 1980s weren’t just scene reports—they were the scene. Photocopied in basements, stapled after school, folded and stapled by hand at “collation parties”, then mailed from PO boxes, these no/lo-budget dispatches captured the wild pulse of American punk. From sarcastic rants to record reviews and unfiltered artwork, they documented local bands, national figures, and DIY ethos before it had a name. Whether from L.A., D.C., or Kalamazoo, zines were where punk lived between gigs.
Free Beer Press was one such Michigan-based effort, published from the great midwest — specifically Michigan! Specifically Oshtemo and Richland. Offered here are two issues: #3 (black stock, July 1983) and #6 (white stock, 1984). Issue #3 includes a hilariously bitter takedown of the Minutemen’s What Makes a Man Start Fires, a small ad for The Meatmen (And You Suck!), and the fake tabloid headline: “It’s Hinckley’s Baby! — sobs Jodie,” riffing on the Reagan assassination attempt. Issue #6 lightens up with a glowing review of the Minutemen’s Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat (and acknowledging the reviewer’s change of heart on the band) and a nod to Killer Pussy’s Bikini Wax. Both issues are single 11½” × 17″ sheets folded once—raw, local, and incredibly scarce examples of regional DIY punk documentation.
Nearly impossible to find and likely printed in tiny numbers, these two issues of Free Beer Press are rare survivors from Michigan’s early-’80s punk underground. For fans of DIY culture, outsider journalism, or just the beautiful mess of it all.
