Description
Mineshaft is one of the great survivors of the underground-comix tradition, an independently published magazine mixing comics, drawing, writing, poetry and whatever else editors Everett Rand and Gioia Palmieri find interesting. No. 36 is particularly strong: its front and back covers are by R. Crumb, with “Excerpts from R. Crumb’s Dream Diary” and “The Wandering Mind,” alongside Mary Fleener, Billy Childish, Justin Green, Christoph Mueller, Denis Kitchen, David Collier, Noah Van Sciver, Aleksandar Zograf and others. Published in October 2018, it was a first printing of just 1,000 copies.
No. 37 followed in Spring 2019 with a Drew Friedman cover featuring Billy Childish, Mary Fleener and R. Crumb and more work from the strange little corner of contemporary underground culture that Mineshaft has kept alive since 1999. Included with the two issues is the magazine’s 20th Anniversary 1999–2019 pamphlet, prominently illustrated with an R. Crumb cartoon and a Charles Bukowski piece. A terrific compact collection of later underground-comix culture with especially strong Crumb content.
Two consecutive Mineshaft issues plus the 20th Anniversary piece—a great little R. Crumb and underground-comix package.
