Description
A terrific six-piece group issued for Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery, with the sheets numbered consecutively 1 through 6 and photographed by production still photographer Merrick Morton. The group covers nearly the whole world of the film: Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes, James Caan as Paul Sheldon, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, Frances Sternhagen, and director Rob Reiner himself working with Caan on set. AFI confirms Morton as the production’s still photographer and Castle Rock Entertainment as its production company; the film opened November 30, 1990.
And Misery has only grown in stature. William Goldman adapted King’s novel for Reiner, who had already directed King’s Stand by Me. At its center is Bates’s Annie Wilkes, one of the defining performances of modern psychological horror. These aren’t later celebrity prints pulled from publicity images: they’re period promotional sheets carrying the Castle Rock marks, original captions and Morton credit, with the unusual bonus of the Reiner behind-the-scenes sheet.
Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Kathy Bates and James Caan—a great little archive from one of the essential horror films of the 1990s.
