Description

Rick Moody’s The Diviners is one of his most ambitious novels, a sprawling meditation on American media culture, memory, celebrity, addiction, and spiritual hunger in the early 21st century. Following the critical and commercial success of The Ice Storm and Purple America, this book marked a turn toward larger narrative architecture and more overtly mythic terrain, blending Hollywood satire, road narrative, and cultural critique into a dense, layered work.

What makes this copy special is the inscription. At a signing, Moody was asked to inscribe a copy to his favorite dead author — and he obliged, inscribing it to William Gaddis, adding a personal note referencing having once dined with him. I stole this idea from the fine folks at Bolerium Books in San Francisco decades ago. It’s always interesting to see how this request plays out at various readings, and in this case, it’s an unusual, thoughtful inscription that bridges contemporary American fiction with one of its most demanding modernist forebears, creating a fun, light-hearted one-off association copy with literary resonance.

So whatever you do, steal the idea!
