Description
Shriek! was part of the great mid-1960s monster magazine boom—squarely in the wake of Famous Monsters of Filmland and squarely aimed at the teenage horror obsessive. Edited by Frank N. Stein (yes, really), and packed with film stills, lurid layouts, and breathless copy, these are pure drive-in era ephemera. The October 1965 issue features “My Life of Terror” with Boris Karloff, coverage of Vincent Price, Dr. Terror’s House of Horror, and Wargods of the Deep. The Winter 1967 issue includes Frankenstein features, The Mask, Carry On Screaming, Daleks, Fu Manchu, and more.
Beyond the film coverage, what makes these especially fun are the period ads—mail-order monster masks, “48-inch Talking Monster from Outer Space,” Regency Mail Order novelties, and full-page bodybuilding-era weirdness. They capture the exact cultural moment when horror was shifting from studio gothic to camp, psychedelia, and creature-feature excess. For collectors of 1960s monster culture, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, or horror magazine history, these are sharp, displayable survivors.
A great two-issue starter set or an upgrade for your monster mag shelf.
