Steve Richmond occupies a unique place in the Los Angeles poetry underground. A close friend, drinking companion, and frequent collaborator of Charles Bukowski, Richmond developed a voice entirely his own—surreal, darkly comic, self-destructive, and often startlingly funny. While Bukowski’s reputation grew internationally, Richmond remained a cult figure whose work circulated largely through small presses, readings, and the underground literary scene of Southern California.

Published by Guillotine Press in Long Beach, A Simple Cretin’s Therapy was issued in a signed edition of just 250 copies. The colophon notes appearances of these poems in a variety of little magazines and identifies Richmond as living “with his demons somewhere in Santa Monica.” Illustrated by Walt Phillips and edited by Keith A. Dodson, the chapbook stands as an appealing artifact from the final flowering of the West Coast small-press movement that helped define an entire generation of outsider writers.
