A remarkable four-book gathering of American photography: Mike Mandel, Susan Meiselas, Bill Burke, and Lee Friedlander, each given an individual volume built from work reaching back decades. Mandel’s Boardwalk Minus Forty returns to photographs made from 1973–1983 and the formative period preceding his landmark collaboration Evidence with Larry Sultan; Meiselas’s Prince Street Girls follows a group of young women on New York’s Lower East Side between 1976 and 1979; Burke’s They Shall Take Up Serpents, also drawn from 1976–1979, moves through the intense Appalachian world of coal miners and religious snake handlers; and Friedlander’s Head ranges across fifty years, 1965–2015, turning one of his recurring visual motifs into a characteristically strange, funny and formally brilliant sequence.

Published by TBW Books in 2017 as Subscription Series No. 5, the four books were designed as a unified object while remaining distinct bodies of work, each in an edition of only 1,000 copies. The set was subsequently shortlisted for the 2017 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook of the Year Award and is now sold out from TBW. It’s an unusually deep lineup: four important American photographers, four independent books, and four very different approaches to vernacular life, documentary photography and the photographic sequence.
