Issued in the thick of the First World War, The Illustrated War News delivered what newspapers could not: large-format photographic and illustrated reporting from the expanding front. This March 10, 1915 issue (Part 31) offers a remarkable visual record of the war’s early-middle phase, when expectations of a short conflict had collapsed and the realities of trench warfare were becoming brutally clear. Inside are full-page images and reportage documenting Austrian 30.5 cm mortars concealed behind barns, early armored vehicles improvising reconnaissance roles, portraits of Russian commanders including General Nicholas Vladimirovitch Ruzsky, and a sweeping panoramic map of the Dardanelles just as the Gallipoli campaign was intensifying. The magazine captures not only the machinery of war, but also its shifting strategy and scale.

As always with The Illustrated War News, the publication pairs battlefield photography with home-front appeals, including a striking R.S.P.C.A. plea for funds for sick and wounded horses—a poignant reminder of the war’s enormous animal casualties.
