Description
One of the most important small press publications of the 1960s, The Outsider was produced by Jon and Louise Webb’s Loujon Press—famously printed by hand in New Orleans in small, labor-intensive editions. Issue No. 2 is especially significant (they all are, really), bringing together a remarkable group of contributors including William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, and Jean Genet.
More than a literary magazine, The Outsider stands not only as a document of the Beat and post-Beat underground at a moment when small presses were redefining how literature could be produced and distributed, but also one of the very first champions for Charles Bukowski. The mix of poetry, prose, and experimental writing—paired with its distinctive handmade production—gives it a presence that goes beyond the text itself. Copies are notoriously delicate due to their construction, and surviving examples in collectible condition are getting increasingly scarce.
A cornerstone of 1960s small press and Beat literature—essential and highly collectible.
