Everybody remembers Bettie Page, Lili St. Cyr and Tempest Storm, but then there were the countless other women who populated the great era of American cheesecake photography. This wonderful circa 1950s silver gelatin print appears to be one of them: an unidentified model, barefoot in a bedroom, smiling for the camera while opening an oversized white shirt. It’s wonderfully unpolished—bedspread, patterned curtains, shoes kicked onto the rug—and feels considerably more intimate than the carefully staged studio pin-ups of the period.
And then you turn it over. Someone once identified the model as “Kiki.” Then somebody crossed that out and apparently decided she was “Lili.” Were either of them right? I have absolutely no idea—and that’s half the charm. Whatever identity she once had has become separated from the photograph, leaving behind this funny little bit of uncertainty on the verso. Kiki? Lili? Sixty-odd years later, your guess is as good as mine.
