Cloth of the Tempest by Kenneth Patchen (1948, 2nd limited ed.)

$60.00

Offering: Kenneth Patchen. Cloth of the Tempest. NYC: Padell, 1948.

Second edition stated, one of 2500 copies. The dust jacket shows moderate toning and light edgewear, with some faint soiling visible. The book itself has clean, sound boards though the cloth shows gentle age-darkening, especially to the spine. There is some mottling to the top edge and minor evidence of price sticker removal to the inside front cover. Still, the binding remains tight and square. Much better than it sounds.

Description

In 1943, amidst the global upheaval of World War II, Kenneth Patchen emerged as a distinctive voice in American poetry. His work during this period was marked by a profound pacifism and a commitment to exploring the human condition beyond the confines of war and violence. Patchen’s poetry often delved into themes of love, innocence, and the mystical aspects of existence, offering readers a sanctuary from the surrounding turmoil. His innovative blending of visual art and verse began to take shape during this time, setting the stage for his later “painted books.”

Cloth of the Tempest is a collection that encapsulates Patchen’s early forays into combining poetic text with visual elements. The poems within navigate the complexities of human emotion, spirituality, and the quest for peace in a fractured world. Patchen’s use of vivid imagery and experimental structures challenges traditional poetic forms, inviting readers into a space where language and art converge. This work stands as a testament to his belief in the transformative power of poetry and its ability to transcend the chaos of the times.

A harmonious blend of poetic innovation and heartfelt introspection, Cloth of the Tempest offers a timeless exploration of the human spirit amidst adversity.
