Description

London: Heinemann, 1959. This is the book along with the original watercolor mock-up from the book’s production; along with the final, original, camera-ready acrylic painting of the cover.

Book is good only in good dustjack with creases and a large (1″ 1/4″ in chip at base of spine (see pic). Book itself shows some spotting and tiny chips from the first  dozen pages or so…but we’re not here for the book, which, in great shape, can be had online for $50 or so.

Here’s the cool stuff: the watercolor mock-up, 9 1/8″” x 7 3/4″,  is taped on the back side of the mat for the acrylic painting, with penciled notes from, I’ll assume, the art director at Heinemann?

I gently peeled back the matting from the acrylic painting, which is about 8″ x 10″, to reveal more of the director’s notes.

Original, mid-century illustration art is getting harder and harder to come by, and taken together — from mock-up to to final illustration to the printed jacket — these three pieces would make a great addition to any book lover’s collection…whether the collector is just a fan of the process, or a collector of mystery / noir genre, or a Jack Usher collector. By they way, the title was later published as Reason for Murder by Pocket books. Usher’s second novel, The Fix, was published as one of the “Morrow Mysteries”. Usher also wrote for T.V. in the early 60’s.
